Sir Kirby Laing

Sir Kirby Laing

Sir Kirby Laing (1916–2009) was an engineer, business leader and philanthropist whose life was shaped by a deep commitment to his profession, his Christian faith and service to wider society.

Together with his brother Maurice, he played a central role in the growth of the John Laing business, building on the foundations laid by their father, Sir John Laing. Under their leadership, the company expanded internationally and became known not only for its engineering capability, but for a strong sense of responsibility in how it operated.

Alongside his work in industry, Sir Kirby remained closely engaged with the engineering profession. He served as President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1973, reflecting his belief in the importance of leadership, standards and the long-term development of the field.

In 1972, he established the Kirby Laing Foundation, which has supported a wide range of causes, including communicating the Christian faith in ways that are relevant in the 21st century, improving care for older people in the UK, developing young talent in the performing arts, and increasing opportunities for under-represented groups in Nepal and Bangladesh.

As part of this broader charitable mission, Constructive Pioneers draws inspiration from Sir Kirby's engineering background and the Foundation’s interest in how buildings and places can better serve the people who use them.

The issues facing the built environment are becoming increasingly complex, urgent and interconnected. Whether in housing, public health, climate or community, they require new ideas, new approaches and broader collaboration to overcome them.

Constructive Pioneers builds on Sir Kirby’s legacy by backing a new generation of people with the ambition and potential to respond to today’s challenges and create a built environment that works for people and planet.
